Middlesex opener Sam Robson has been called up to the England squad for next week's Investec Test against Sri Lanka.

The Australian-born bastman qualifies for his adopted country as he has been playing for Middlesex since 2008.

He is one of three uncapped players picked for the 12-man squad, along with pace bowler Chris Jordan and all rounder Moeen Ali, for the test, which commences next Thursday (June 12) at Lord’s.

Yorkshire pace bowler Liam Plunkett has also been included in the squad seven years after winning his last Test cap which was against West Indies in 2007.

National selector James Whitaker said: “The selectors would like to congratulate all the players selected in the squad for the 1 Investec Test against Sri Lanka. We would also like to acknowledge the contribution of both the County and England Performance Programme coaches in helping to develop the talents of Sam Robson, Liam Plunkett, Moeen Ali and Chris Woakes. All four have carried their exciting winter form into the domestic season to earn well deserved recognition.

“We believe that this group of emerging talent will be very well complimented by the established core of experienced players that have been selected.

“We are expecting a tough series against Sri Lanka and the Selectors would like to wish Peter Moores, Alastair Cook, the coaches and players all the best for a good performance.”

Middlesex chief executive Vinnie Codrington added: “We are delighted for Sam, who richly deserves this opportunity at this stage of his career, as due reward for all the hard work and dedication he has shown in pursuing a career in England with Middlesex.

"As a club, Middlesex CCC is hugely proud of the history we’ve had of developing players for the international stage and Sam is one of a long production line of cricketers to have gone on to represent their countries at Test level, following hot on the heels of Steven Finn and Eoin Morgan in more recent times.

"We would like to wish Sam all the very best of luck in the forthcoming series and hope that this is the beginning of a long and successful international career with England.”
