Middlesex are weighing up their options after Adam Voges was named in the Australian Test squad for their tours of the West Indies and England.

The 35-year-old secured a recall to the national team after scoring 1,358 runs at an average of 104.46 in the Sheffield Shield.

It leaves the Lord's county in a difficult position for the second time in two years with former Middlesex captain Chris Rogers enjoying a renaissance in the Australian side leading to his departure from the club due to his international commitments this year.

And Middlesex, who signed Voges as Rogers' replacement in 2013, are now looking for an overseas player to fill the void.

A club statement read: “Middlesex County Cricket Club would firstly like to congratulate Adam Voges on his re-selection to the Australian Test squad, announced early this morning by Cricket Australia.

“All of us at Middlesex are naturally delighted for Adam on his deserved inclusion in the squad, however this does leave us with the difficult problem of needing to find a replacement overseas player for the 2015 season with some immediacy.

“Given the record-breaking form that Adam has been in this winter in the Sheffield Shield for Western Australia, his call up to the Australian squad became increasingly likely with every run scored, and towards the end of the Shield campaign became almost an inevitability, so we have for some time been working on a contingency plan in the event that this became a reality.

“Conversations have been had, a shortlist of suitable players has been drawn up, and in light of this morning's announcement by Cricket Australia we can now begin to formalise these plans to secure a replacement.

“Cricket Australia have confirmed to us that Adam Voges will still be available to represent Middlesex for the first four LV= County Championship matches of the English domestic season, before he joins up with the Australian Test squad for their tour to the West Indies in June.

“The club as always will make a formal announcement of Adam's replacement when contracts are finalised and signed.”
