Neil Dexter is not losing any sleep over Middlesex's position in the County Championship table, despite the fact they could still be drawn into a relegation battle.

This week's rain-affected draw with Warwickshire left the Seaxes just 12 points above Lancashire in the second Division One drop zone place, with bottom side Northants already gone.

But Durham's shock win over Nottingham brought them level on points with Middlesex, although both sides have played one game less than Lancashire.

To make matters even more intriguing, Durham are the next visitors to Lord's, for a match starting next Tuesday, which will be Middlesex's last home fixture of the season.

Dexter said: “It's been an up and down season – not a disastrous one, but can always look to do better.

“We started well and were top at one point, but the Twenty20 and one-dayers didn't go our way, and in the four day cricket we had a spell when we couldn't bowl teams out, which put us in a bad position.

Not to blame: Dexter in Twent20 action for Middlesex this summer

“I don't think we can blame the break for Twenty20 and one-dayers as we were messing up in four day game before they even started started. We've just missed the trick in little episodes, and losing one episode can lose you the game.

“There are still a lot of points available though, and we're still playing some pretty good cricket. The thing is, other teams have been playing well too. At least it's on our own hands though, we could be in a worse position.”

Dexter's summer has mirrored that of Middlesex's, with the former skipper having very much an up and down year, but he was back in form against Warwickshire.

Having taken three top order wickets in the first innings, his knock of 70 then came at a crucial time for Middlesex, who were wobbling on 65-3 when he came in.

In the end, they recovered to declare on 372-9, following Warwickshire's first innings declaration on 362-8, but with a whole day lost to rain, there was only time on the final day for Warwickshire to reach 182-2, while Middlesex did not bat again.
