HAYES & Yeading United survived two late scares to hand AFC Wimbledon a 2-1 defeat and knock them off the top of Blue Square South.

Josh Scott headed the hosts into a 24th minute lead but that lasted just three minutes after Elliott Godfrey tried to burst the net, sending the majority of the record 1,526 Church Road crowd wild.

Scott Fitzgerald sneaked in unnoticed to sidefoot home Steven Gregory's precise pass and put United back in front, forcing former Hayes manager Terry Brown, now in charge of the Wombles, to throw an extra man up front in a bid to rescue the game.

James Mulley headed off the line and dogged United kept their nerve despite a late goalmouth scramble to go top of the table on the back of their eighth league win on the trot.
