Middlesex 280-3 v Northants

Middlesex 2pts Northants 1pt

Nick Gubbins hit a half century on his Middlesex debut yesterday at Lord's yesterday - after nearly running out skipper Chris Rogers for his first single.

Fortunately for the hosts, both survived the incident and went on to pile up a first wicket partnership of 128 runs at Northants were made to pay for an odd decision to put  Middlesex in to bat.

Gubbins, 20, struck six fours and a six before top-edging Mohammad Azharullah to Maurice Chambers at mid-on for 54, while Rogers looked set for a ton until he was clean bowled by former Middlesex man Steven Crook, having hit 10 fours and a six on his way to 86.

Despite his disappointment at not reaching a fourth 100 of the season, Rogers' efforts did take his County Championship haul for the season to 907, making him the competition;s top scorer.

Once the opening pair fell, Dawid Malan continued the charge with an unbeaten 72 after Eoin Morgan disappointingly fell to Andrew Hall in the final session for 27.

Neil Dexter came in to partner Malan, and had added an unbeaten 19 by the close of play as he and Morgan put on an unbroken fourth-wicket stand of 50. Play resumes today at 11am.

Not this time: Chris Rogers celebrates a century, but was 14 runs short of another yesterday
