MIDDLESEX V SUSSEX DAY ONE
LV COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP
Middlesex: Yet to bat
Sussex: Yet to bat
MERCHANT Taylors’ School will have to wait a little longer to make their first piece of County Championship history.
Bank Holiday Monday should have marked the first time the Northwood secondary school for boys, founded in the time of Elizabeth I, had staged cricket’s premier domestic competition, first played in 1890.
However, rain washed out play on day one with the two umpires admitting defeat to the elements following a third inspection of the day shortly after 3.30pm.
Losing a day to the weather will frustrate the league leaders and their south coast visitors, particularly on a day when all their rivals enjoyed at least some play at other venues around the country.
However, from a Merchant Taylors’ perspective, having waited 124 years for the privilege, one more day may be a small price to pay.
All sides will hope for better fortune and a prompt start tomorrow at 11am.
