Sometimes a risk pays off, and sometimes it doesn’t.

Yesterday I risked leaving my bike unlocked for five minutes outside the library– it wasn’t there when I got back.

No doubt many have risked their money on Comic – an ex-racing greyhound - and also lost.

But Comic’s racing days are over and the real winner will be the one who gets to take him home forever, and walk him in the park in his smart red suit.

It was a freezing cold day when I met Comic and most of the dogs were wearing their coats.

If you haven’t visited the National Animal Welfare Trust (NAWT) rehoming centre, although the dogs do have a heated part to their kennels, facilities are basic, and on a cold, windy day it’s bitter.

Comic and I spent time in the Wendy House which was warm and peaceful.

After initially lying on the sofa pretending to be asleep (greyhounds are renowned for being couch potatoes), Comic amused himself by putting his nose in the toybox, fishing out all the fluffy rabbits and lining them up on the armchair.

Bunny bonding

Well away from the dogs, in another corner of the rehoming centre are real rabbits. And I want to update you on Oakland, the rabbit I recently told you about.

NAWT were looking for a home for Oakland and Willow, the rabbit he was bonded with. A home was found and they were reserved but, unfortunately, Willow died suddenly.

So Oakland is still at NAWT but is on his own and is looking for a neutered female rabbit he can be paired with.

Oakland is a big boy who has had a difficult time but he would love to find a new friend for Valentine’s Day.

If you can home Comic or if you have a suitable companion and could home Oakland, call 020 8950 0177 or meet them at NAWT, Tylers Way, Watford-by-pass.

NAWT have over 50 dogs and up to 80 cats in their care as well as rabbits and guinea pigs.

They are asking that for Valentine's Day, we make up for them a Basket of Love. Ideas for items to include are toys, treats, blankets, food and vegetables.

Please bring your Valentine’s Basket/bag to the centre when it is ready.
