Two young rowers who capsized in the River Thames were rescued by a Chiswick lifeboat crew.

The youngsters got caught in windy conditions on the river off Strand on the Green on Thursday April 16 just after 2pm.

Luckily they managed to climb to safety aboard the boat of their rowing coach but only to find that its engine had failed.

A passer-by called 999 and the coastguard who dispatched the Chiswick RNLI lifeboat to the scene.

The rescue team arrived within minutes to the scene to find the group drifting towards the piers of Kew rail bridge.

Both rowers were extremely cold and quickly taken on-board the lifeboat by the volunteer crew and given blankets before being whisked to safety to their boathouse.

They required no further medical attention, according to the RNLI.

The lifeboat crew then went to retrieve the twin oar which was caught in the trees and returned it.

Chiswick RNLI helmsman Glen Monroe said: "It was important that we were able to use the speed of the lifeboat to reach the young rowers quickly, as they were soaked through and getting colder by the minute in the strong easterly wind."
