A man from Ladbroke Grove has been charged with importing Class A drugs after the discovery of cocaine in wooden statues.

Darius Atiba Williams, from Bonchurch Road, was one of two men picked up after an National Crime Agency (NCA) operation in Edmonton, north London.

Williams, 33, and Ted Dexter Frederick, 46 and of no fixed abode, were arrested as NCA officers raided an address on the Eley Trading Estate on Monday (December 19) evening.

A Border Force X-ray reveals the hidden Class A drugs

It followed the seizure at Gatwick Airport on December 16 of four statues which had been shipped from Trinidad.

Border Force officers X-rayed the items and found an estimated 20kg of cocaine hidden inside.

NCA say the load would have had a wholesale value to organised crime of around £650,000, but if cut and sold on the street it is likely to have had a potential likely street value in excess of £3million.

Frederick and Williams are due to appear before Croydon Magistrates on Wednesday (December 21).
