A quarter of staff who filled out a staff survey at London's Ambulance Service would not recommend the care to friends and family.

Nearly three-quarters of around 5.5% of staff who took part in the survey think it is a poor place to work.

Of staff surveyed at the ambulance service between January and March this year, 26% said they would not recommend the services they work in to friends and family needing care.

The latest figures from NHS England's Staff Family and Friends Test is one of the highest proportions in England.

Other NHS providers in west London also fared poorly in terms of endorsements from staff, with 20.7% of staff at West London Mental Health Trust saying they would not recommend the care.

As well as not recommending the care provision, 72.3% of staff at London Ambulance Service said they would not recommend it to loved ones as a place to work.

From April 2014, the Staff Friends and Family Test was introduced to allow staff feedback on NHS Services based on recent experience.

A spokesman said: “Our staff provide high standards of patient care across London every day.

“These results are based on the view of around 5.5% of our workforce and reflect some of the challenges we have faced in recent months in issues such as demand on the 999 system and also staffing, which we are addressing through our recruitment programme.

“However, we are seeing improvements and hope that future surveys will start to reflect that.”

The Royal Marsden, with 95.8% of staff recommending the care, was among the most highly recommended for care in England.

During Quarter 4, the total number of responses to Staff Friends and Family Test was 151,605. The total number of responses for 2014-15 to date is 456,679.

Nationally the percentage of staff who would recommend their organisation to friends and family in need of care/treatment is 77.2%, while the percentage who would not recommend their organisation is 7.5%.

There has been a small improvement in the proportion who would have recommended their workplace in the last survey in Quarter 2, 76.5%.

The percentage of staff who would recommend their organisation to friends and family as a place to work is 61.7%, while the percentage who would not recommend their organisation is 18.9%.

There has been a small improvement in the proportion who would have recommended their workplace in the last survey in Quarter 2, 61.4%.

A West London Mental Health Trust spokesman said: "We are disappointed with the results from this small sample, however, this represents just 5.4% of our staff.

"The trust aims to provide excellent quality care to every person who uses our services.

"Only last week the Care Quality Commission commended our ‘safe and effective’ crisis care.

"We have robust programmes in place to improve staff engagement and care quality and we are seeing positive results from both."
