Airline workers are digging their new allotment space at the British Airways' headquarters near Heathrow Airport.

Staff based at the Waterside offices, who were lucky enough to secure a plot, have shared the fruits of their labour during National Allotment Week.

Among the riches on display are a giant marrow, strawberries, tomatoes and runner beans.

Paul Jarvis, British Airways’ museum curator, who masterminded the allotment project along with the airline’s well-being team, said: “It’s all too easy for office-based workers to not step foot outside all day.

"Our work-place allotment not only gives staff the opportunity to grow healthy produce, but they also get exercise, fresh air and a space to meet new people in their spare time.”

Proud fruit and veg plot holders are reaping the benefits of having work-based allotment and have been sharing recipes and advice on growing the fresh produce.

The BA gardening community are also organising the upcoming Harvest Festival in September.

Fiona Lamond, BA wellbeing consultant, said: “The allotment is a great place to come during lunch-break to get some sunshine and meet new friends.

"I’m particularly proud of the marrow that I’ve grown.

"I plan on picking it at our allotment Harvest Festival in early September and asking colleagues across the airline to guess its weight as part of roadshow my team is holding to encourage healthier life-styles.”

Cabin crew member, Britney Wilson, who visited the allotment for the first time, said: “I would love to serve British Airways-grown vegetables on my flight – I think it would be great for our customers to taste the fruit of our labour!”

National Allotment Week runs from August 10-16.
