A woman has been convicted of fraudulently pretending to collect money for a children's charity at Southfields Tube Station during last year's Wimbledon Championship.

Philomena Akintan, of Peckham High Street, was given a six-week suspended sentence and ordered to pay £850 at Highbury Crown Court on Tuesday (June 20) after she was found guilty of fraud by false representation.

Akintan had positioned herself in Southfields station on June 27 2016 when she was spotted by staff at the station.

The 55-year-old told staff she was collecting money for the CLIC Sargent charity but checks with the charity showed no record of her, the collection or of any money being received.

Southfields is the second closest tube station to The All England Lawn Tennis Club where The Championships have been held every year since 1922.

Investigating officer Inspector Dan Tanner said: “We are determined to tackle these type of fraud offences - which not only damage the travelling public’s confidence in donating money but directly take money from those who really need it.”
