A woman aged 96 has died after being hit by a lorry in Westminster.

The collision between a female pedestrian and a lorry on Wigmore Street at the junction with Wellbeck Street, happened at 2.20pm on Wednesday (April 27).

Police have closed local roads and urged motorists to avoid the area due to congestion while the incident is dealt with.

Officers and paramedics from the London Ambulance Service (LAS) attended the crash and sadly the elderly woman was pronounced dead at the scene at 2.33pm.

A spokesman for LAS said: “We were called at 2.21pm to reports of a road traffic collision on Wigmore Street involving a female pedestrian and a truck.

“We sent a number of resources, including an ambulance crew, an advanced paramedic and a single responder by car, arriving within five minutes.

“Sadly, the woman died of extensive head injuries at the scene”.

Metropolitan Police are appealing for witnesses who may have seen anything or have any information on the crash.

Detectives from the serious collision investigation unit are investigating.

Next of kin are yet to be informed.

Formal identification and a post-mortem examination will held in due course.

No arrests have been made and police enquires continue.
