A prospective candidate was forced to withdraw from the London mayoral elections after failing to hand in documents on time.

Winston McKenzie, who was due to run for the English Democrats, met with London Elects for the first time on Thursday (March 31), the day of registration for candidates.

However, it emerged the paperwork which needed to be carried out was incomplete, leaving Mr McKenzie with no choice but to pull out of the race.

A spokesperson for London Elects, the body overseeing the elections, said: "Upon inspection, the incomplete forms contained errors which would have invalidated the nomination - in the form of duplicate signatures from other candidates' nomination papers."
