Plain-clothed officers and knife arches will be in place this Christmas in Westminster as part of an “enhanced high-visibility” police operation aiming to keep Londoners safe.

Operation Blizzard has been launched by Metropolitan Police so that tourists and Londoners will be able to enjoy festivities in the capital “without fear of crime or anti-social behaviour”.

After being launched on Thursday (November 23), the operation will enforce “enhanced high-visibility policing” with plain-clothed officers patrolling and targeting offenders.

Knife arches will also be set up at key times and locations to detect “the minority who may be carrying a weapon”, a spokesman for the force said.

Chief Superintendent Peter Ayling, borough commander from Westminster, said Metropolitan Police's increased presence aims to reassure people during the festive season .

“The MPS wants Christmas to be enjoyed by all visiting, working and living in Westminster,” he said after the launch of the operation.

“Shopping and celebrating make up a big part of the festive fun, therefore Operation Blizzard will reassure the public through our increased presence while making the West End a hostile place for criminals.”

The high-visibility police operation will run until January 7.

How can I protect my possessions?

According to Metropolitan Police , thieves are opportunistic and will take any chance they can to steal your purse, cash or mobile phone.

While the force highlighted the fact “thefts from bags and coats are unlikely to involve direct threats against individuals”, a spokesman said it can be “distressing, costly and a big inconvenience”.

In order to protect Londoners this Christmas – whether shopping or enjoying the festivities in Westminster – the force is urging them to take a few simple steps to help prevent crime.

  • If your bag has a zip or a clasp, keep it fastened when you're out and about
  • Carry your Oyster card or travel ticket separately to avoid highlighting your wallet or phone unnecessarily
  • Always be aware of your surroundings, especially when using your phone in public
  • Make sure your phone is locked with a PIN or code and install a tracker app in case it is stolen
  • Plan your journey home in advance, use taxis or pre-booked mini-cabs

“We can all help the police by reading their guidelines on how to protect your belongings, and make sure you have a plan to get home after your Christmas party.”

If you see any suspicious activity or have any information about who is committing these crimes, call police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
