Westminster has the highest rates of teen pregnancy in the country and nearly a third of all pregnancies in Kensington & Chelsea end in an abortion, new figures reveal.

Of the 2,496 pregnancies in the Royal borough in 2013, 29.1% were aborted - up from 25.9% in 2009, according to the Office for National Statistics’ latest figures.

Kensington & Chelsea has the fourth highest abortion rate in the country after Lambeth, Southwark and Islington.

But it was neighbouring Westminster which had the highest levels of teen abortions across England and Wales, with 83.3% of pregnant teens aborting their babies. Kensington & Chelsea came in third, equal to Bracknell Forest at 78.8%.

Hammersmith & Fulham also had high overall abortion rates of 28.5%, the sixth highest in the country and Westminster came in eighth with 28.4%.

Across England and Wales, abortion rates have risen marginally in the past five years from 21% in 2009 to 21.2% in 2013.

Abortion rates among pregnant teenagers stand at an average of 50.7% nationally, although teenagers in Wales are less likely to get an abortion than those in England.
