Figures released by Friends of the Earth (FoE) show schools in west London are lagging behind others in using energy-saving solar panels.

With boroughs such as Haringey, Richmond and Lewisham all boasting more than 20 schools with the photovoltaic panels, Hounslow tops the west London table with a relatively paltry six.

Kensington & Chelsea, Brent and Harrow only have one each, while Hammersmith & Fulham, Ealing, Hillingdon and Westminster fail to have any schools with the green technology.

Government estimates a typical school system can generate an income of £3,400 per year as well as providing pupils with a working example of a renewable technology.

Green Party London Assembly Member Jenny Jones is calling on London Mayor Boris Johnson to boost the number of schools using the panels.

She said: “Solar photovoltaics have the greatest potential of any renewable electricity generating technology in London and everybody should be benefiting from this clean energy source that not only cuts our bills but our carbon emissions.”
