A Westminster housing estate has become the largest in central London to get full fibre-optic Internet service.

All 1,700 homes in Churchill Gardens Estate in Pimlico can now access Gigabit Internet from Community Fibre - that's 1,000Mbps for both downloading and uploading online.

The estate is the 16th across Westminster, Wandsworth and Camden to be fitted with the service, totalling 10,000 properties.

Westminster City Council's Cabinet member for housing, Councillor Rachael Robathan, said it is "great news".

"This will enable them to use multiple devices and have faster access to Internet services that can help support them to live, work and thrive in the heart of London," she said.

Broadband and connectivity member at the council, Councillor Jonathan Glanz, said the roll-out of ultrafast broadband in London is "essential".

10,000 properties now have access to superfast Internet thanks to Community Fibre

"Not only will it improve the opportunity and the standard of living of many of our residents, it will support the continued economic development of our city," he said.

"In other words, if we are to maintain our position as one of the world’s great cities, it is vital that we improve digital connectivity and position ourselves at the forefront of 21st century technology."
