West London acts top the charts for the most Christmas hits

West London musicians have more Christmas top 10 singles than musicians from Manchester and Liverpool, see the list.

David Bowie climbed to #9 in 1975 and #3 with Bing Crosby in 1982

According to the Official Charts Company acts from West London have had 28 songs in the Christmas top 10 over the years including two number ones. This is more than entire cities such as Manchester and Liverpool, both of which are famed for their musical heritage.

Freddie Mercury - from Feltham - is responsible for both of the number ones winning with Bohemian Rhapsody in 1975 and then again with the same song posthumously in 1991.

The figures - which go back to 1960 - show that Elton John, David Bowie, Adam and the Ant and Phil Collins all have multiple entries into the Christmas top ten. However, only Adam Faith's Lonely Pup (In a Christmas Shop) which came seventh in 1960 can be said to be a Christmas song.

The Christmas number one has been secured by an extremely varied range of songs and the vast majority of them have nothing to do with Christmas at all. Only 10 of the 54 number ones are overtly Christmassy and - due to the fact that Band Aid's various incarnations have won the Christmas cracker crown three times so far - three of these are actually the same song.

Mud's Lonely this Christmas was the star atop the tree in 1974 while Cliff Richard put two Christmas classics at number one with Mistletoe and Wine in 1988 and Saviour's Day in 1990.

However the number one slot has never consistently been the preserve of great songs - never mind great Christmas songs. In 1969 Rolf Harris' - now sinisterly titled - Two Little Boys topped the chart. 1980 saw St Winifred's School Choir romp to victory with a song called There's No One Quite Like Grandma. Mr Blobby won the accolade in 1993, and in 2000 Bob the Builder stole the show with Can We Fix It?

Many of the true Christmas compilation classics are nowhere to be seen. The Pogues and Kirsty McColl's Fairytale of New York, one of the greatest ever yuletide tunes came second in 1987, Wizzard's I Wish it could be Christmas everyday only managed fourth spot in 1973, and Wham!'s Last Christmas could only muster sixth in 1985.
