A man is under arrest after jumping into a canal and staying put for hours while emergency services tried to coax him out.

Emergency services were called to the canal in West Drayton on Friday August 18 after reports the man was "making threats".

Police attended the scene and reported the man had jumped into the Grand Union Canal.

A specialist police negotiator was called in to talk the man out of the water, but he stayed put for several hours.

Metropolitan Police confirmed it was called at 10.50am to High Street, Yiewsley to reports of a man making threats.

A spokesman for the force said: “Officers attended and the man - riding a bicycle - was still at the scene.

“He made off from officers and subsequently jumped into the Grand Union Canal nearby.

“Additional units along with the London Fire Brigade and London Ambulance Service are on scene.

“A specialist police negotiator will be attending. Efforts to retrieve the man from the water are ongoing.

“The canal path has been cordoned off while emergency services deal.”

London Fire Brigade sent five vehicles and waited in a bid to assist police.

A spokesman for the brigade said: “We were called at 11.27am to Trout Road, West Drayton, to assist with a police incident.

“There is a person in the waterway and we are standing by to assist police.

“We sent three fire engines and two fire rescue units.”

The man stayed in the canal four nearly three hours until around 1.40pm, when he was taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service, while under arrest.
