A pair of intrepid young Wembley adventurers conquered the UK’s highest mountain, aged just eight and nine, raising £800 for Barnardo’s.

Jasmine Hirani and Mahi Meghani stunned friends and family by leading an expedition up Ben Nevis in Scotland on August 1, braving heavy wind, rain, hail stones and freezing conditions.

The friends, who live close to one another near Woodcock Hill on the border of Wembley and Harrow, decided to raise cash for the charity Barnardo's.

Jasmine’s mum, Daksha, said: “I did a bit of research online to see if kids had climbed Ben Nevis before and I came across some forums saying children aged six or seven had done it, so we asked the girls.

“They chose to support Barnardo’s after finding out about the work the charity does to support other children and families.

“The weather conditions on the day were horrendous and they got hit by all seasons - sunny at the bottom, wind, rain, hail stones, finishing off with snow and cloud at the top with freezing temperatures.”

Jasmine made it almost to the peak of Ben Nevis but had ventured out without gloves and had to turn back, leaving Mahi to complete the challenge after five punishing hours.

Daksha said: “Mahi made it to the summit and Jasmine almost made it to the top – she must have been 98% of the way up. It was mummy's fault she forgot the gloves.

“We are extremely proud of the girls.”

Director of Barnardo’s in London, Lynn Gradwell, said: “Jasmine and Mahi have pulled off an incredible feat at such a young age, and I would like to thank them both for taking on such a gruelling climb on behalf of Barnardo’s.

“The money they have raised will help us in our work supporting the most vulnerable children, young people and families in London. Without the backing of people like Jasmine and Mahi, much of our work simply wouldn’t be possible.”
