Lock keepers are needed in Brentford to help keep things flowing smoothly on the Grand Union Canal.

The Canal & River Trust, which manages Britain's waterways, is searching for volunteers to fill the important role.

As well as helping boaters negotiate the locks, they will be responsible for greeting visitors and helping to maintain the canal.

People of all ages are welcome to apply for the role, for which full training will be provided, and applicants will be expected to volunteer for at least one day a fortnight throughout the year.

Volunteer lock keeper Christine Winter said: "Being a volunteer lock keeper is a unique experience; it gets me outdoors, away from desks, screens - and housework.

"While I am doing something useful for the local and boating communities, I am working in an incredibly peaceful environment, where I get to see a variety of birds and wildlife, meet lots of interesting people using the canal or towpath and get some exercise!

"If you like being outdoors, wildlife or meeting new people, what's not to like?"

Applications for the role are open until Monday February 1. For more information, visit canalrivertrust.org.uk/volunteer or call 0303 0404040.
