An aristocrat who offered a £5,000 reward for the "accidental" death of businesswoman and anti-Brexit campaigner Gina Miller has been convicted.

Rhodri Philipps, 50, the 4th Viscount St Davids of Knightsbridge , posted the comment on Facebook on November 7, 2016 - just four days after Ms Miller won a legal challenge over the Brexit decision.

Philipps described Ms Miller as a "troublesome" first generation "immigrant boat jumper" and placed a £5,000 bounty on her head, intimating she should be run over.

He was convicted on two counts of sending a menacing public communication on Tuesday (July 11) after a trial at Westminster Magistrates’ Court .

One of the charges related to victim Ms Miller and the other to a Facebook friend of Philipps, who saw the posts. He initially denied the allegations .

Kate Mulholland, CPS London reviewing lawyer, said: “This threat caused extreme concern to Gina Miller.

Gina Miller was described by Philipps as an 'immigrant boat jumper'

"And although Philipps claimed his Facebook friends would have been tolerant of his views they were open to the public.

“No-one should have these kind of menacing comments made to them or about them and where there is evidence of an offence the CPS and police will bring a prosecution.”

During the trial the CPS successfully asked the court to put in place orders to stop Phillips, who represented himself, personally cross-examining Gina Miller and another witness.

Phillips will be sentenced on Wednesday.
