One of London's busiest stations was evacuated after a fire alarm was accidentally set off.

Trains travelling to and from Victoria Station were temporarily blocked from entering the station after commuters and travellers were made to leave the area.

British Transport Police confirmed it was called at 9.29am to assist.

A spokesman for Network Rail confirmed that the fire alarm was set off at around 9.30am, due to contractors carrying out work at the station.

He said: "We did have a fire alarm go off this morning.

"Some of our contractors were working on the station, near to one of the toilets.

"The fumes from the work being carried out caused the alarm to go off.

"The station was evacuated and reopened again after about 10 minutes, at 9.40am."

Train services returned to normal after the evacuation.
