Police have been called to the intu shopping centre in Uxbridge after reports of a "suspicious package".

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said: "We were called today at 2.22pm to the intu shopping centre on High Street, Uxbridge.

"It's a suspicious package. Road closures are in place.

"As a precaution, police evacuated a nearby building next to the shopping centre.

"Officers are still on the scene and still searching."

intu Uxbridge released a follow up statement, almost two hours after police were called to the ‘suspicious package’.

It read: “Following the discovery of an unattended package, Metropolitan Police responded very quickly.

“A full investigation confirmed it was a false alarm.

“We’re sorry for any disruption caused and we want to thank customers for their patience.

“Please contact Metropolitan Police for further information on 101.”

Bystander reveals picture from scene after evacuation

Those caught up in the incident described the scene as “mayhem” as they were evacuated or told to stay inside their buildings.

One bystander said: “We have all been evicted from offices. Roads are being closed. I think it’s (the suspect package) is by Harmon House.

“I saw people climbing things to get better shots.
“We all got told to go to the civic centre but people have split into groups to go the the pub or home”

intu apologise for disruption after evacuation

intu Uxbridge has released a statement after the incident this afternoon.

It said: “We can confirm that George Street at intu Uxbridge has been evacuated.

“We will update you as soon as we have further information.

“We’re sorry for the disruption and hope that we’ll be back to business as usual very soon.”

Police confirm exact location of 'suspicious package'

The Metropolitan Police have confirmed where the suspicious package was found.

A spokesman said: “Police were called at 2.22pm on Monday, 12 June, to reports of a suspicious package in George Street, Uxbridge.

“Officers are in attendance and road closures are in place.

“The Intu Shopping Centre and nearby buildings have been evacuated as a precaution.

“Enquiries continue.”
