Unemployment in Uxbridge has gone down and follows a London-wide trend of a rapid increase in employment over the past year.
Labour Market Statistics (LMS), released by the Office for National Statistics, show that employment has increased by 14,000 and unemployment has decreased by 27,000 across London.
Inderpal Mudhar, partnership manager for Uxbridge & Hayes Jobcentre Plus, says full-time employment in the Hillingdon borough has been steadily increasing.
He said: “We’re getting high advertisements for jobs especially in our borough, we have new stores opening as well.
“Retail is great for us as we have the Chimes, Pavilions and other stores. We’ve also seen an increase in construction thanks to Heathrow and 11 projects the borough are running on housing.”
JobCentre Plus has 13, 26 and 29-week periods in order to get jobseekers back into work.
Mr Mudhar added: “We have a high percentage of people getting jobs at the 13-week period.
“Work experience will lead to employment. If they don’t have that, they have nothing to write on their CV and they don’t know what the employer wants.
“We’ve seen a trend where those who go into work experience get into work very quickly.”
Ian Duncan Smith, Work and Pensions Secretary, says the figures are evidence of continued confidence in British businesses and potential for further growth in the UK economy.
He said: “Thanks to our long-term economic plan, London has seen the fastest increase in the number of people in work of any UK region since 2010.
“Our one nation government is helping millions across the country to succeed and achieve their full potential. I was particularly pleased to see that wages are continuing to rise, meaning that hardworking people will see a real difference in their pay packets.”
The figures were announced on A-level results day, and coincided with the government launching a work experience drive.
The new ‘WE can’ campaign aims to support young people to take up work experience opportunities and encourage businesses to create them, with 84 Youth Ambassadors leading activities across the country.
Employment Minister Priti Patel said: “Young people tell me they can’t get a job without work experience, but they can’t get work experience without a job.
“That is why we are launching the WE can campaign to give young people practical advice about making the most of their summer holidays – and beyond - to gain valuable business skills.
“With 14 million jobs likely to open up in the UK in the next decade, this one nation Government wants young people to be at the forefront of the opportunities to get the best start in life.”
