In the run up to Christmas before people get caught up in last minute shopping and pampering, NHS Blood and Transplant are urging people in West London to give blood.

Donors are being asked to book into one of the sessions in their area in the coming weeks.

With around 6,000 units of blood required in hospitals in England and North Wales daily, to keep a healthy stock over the festive season people need to donate blood between now and Christmas.

Red blood cells have a shelf life of 35 days and platelets only seven days.

The rarest blood groups which hospitals are in desperate need of are O- negative, B- negative and A- negative.

Michelle Laserna, senior marketing coordinator at NHSBT, said: “We know it is a busy time of year and will only get busier as the festive season approaches.

"That’s why we’re urging our donors to book an appointment to give blood before Christmas, if they don’t already have one.

“And we’d ask our donors to please keep their appointments over the coming weeks to help us keep blood stocks healthy and help hospital patients this winter.”
