Each year, the Christmas jumper game gets bigger and bigger as everyone tries to find the most creative and crazy festive knit to wear to work, around the house and just generally when out and about in the run up to the big day.

With just over five weeks to go, we are all on the look out for that perfect winter woolly.

Instead of simply buying a new one though, how about reaching into your wardrobe and jazzing up that dusty, rejected jumper which hasn't seen the light of day since last year?

Love Your Clothes London is an initiative which promotes sustainable fashion in the capital, and is encouraging Londoners to upcycle and get hands on with their old Christmas jumpers at some of their free sewing workshops across the capital.

The workshops will be hosted by expert sewers who will demonstrate how to make simple repairs, alterations and most importantly, how to jazz up a jumper in time for the festive season.

A combination of hand and sewing machine techniques will be explored in the classes which are running at 15 locations until December 13.

The workshops are free to attend

Figures from a survey of 2,101 UK respondents undertaken by Populus between November 14 and 15, 2015 showed UK consumers were likely to spend in excess of £300m on Christmas jumpers over the festive period, with two fifths planning to wear them only once or twice.

Ali Moore, from Love Your Clothes London, said: An estimated £30bn worth of UK clothing gathers dust in our wardrobes every year because we don't wear it.

"Rather than buying new Christmas jumpers and party outfits which may only be worn once and then thrown away, we’re encouraging Londoners to upcycle last year’s Christmas jumpers.

All you need to take to the workshop is an old plain jumper

"By coming along to these fun workshops, they could come away with not only a truly unique item of clothing, but also feeling inspired to support more sustainable fashion.

"The festive season can be a time of excess and waste, but we want to show people how simple and cheap changes can really make a huge difference to their wardrobes and the environment."

Those attending the workshops will need to bring a plain jumper or top from their wardrobe and sign up online.
