The trip request app Uber have launched a service with greater accessibility for disabled people in the capital.

Launched on Tuesday (October 20) Uber now offer a service called UberASSIST in London, a transport option that is designed to provide additional assistance for disabled riders and different access needs.

According to the company, UberASSIST is different to the normal transport service, in that the vehicle arrives with a partner-driver, who is fully trained to assist with folding wheelchairs, walkers and scooters.

How to request UberASSIST:

  • Email supportuk@uber.com or visit the Uber Newsroom to receive a special code to view this product in your Uber app.
  • Enter your code on the Promotions tab - reachable in the app by pressing the button in the top left corner of the screen.
  • Move the slider at the bottom of the screen to ASSIST.
  • Set your location and request your ride.
  • After requesting, you can contact your UberASSIST partner-driver ahead of time with any specific needs or requests.

A spokesman for Uber said: "As this service is specifically aimed at disabled people and those with access needs, please respect others in our rider community by only using UberASSIST if you need to.

"We want to ensure those who need to get an UberASSIST ride can do so. If you think it’ll help you, then go ahead - we’re not going to check. We trust Uber riders to do the right thing.

"Looking forward to offering you a safe, reliable and accessible ride."
