A tree will be planted in memory of Chiswick 'car lady' Anne Naysmith, Hounslow Council announced as it confirmed arrangements for her funeral.

Ms Naysmith's funeral will take place this Saturday (March 7), at St Michael and All Angels, in Bath Road, Chiswick, from 11am. Her body will then be taken to Chiswick New Cemetery.

Hundreds of people are expected to pay their last respects this weekend to the former concert pianist, whose story touched the hearts of people in Chiswick and across the country.

The council said it planned to plant a tree in her honour at a later date, with the location yet to be confirmed.

The 78-year-old slept for many years in a car outside her old home in Prebend Gardens, Chiswick, after being evicted in the '70s. When that was removed, she slept on the streets.

She refused to accept any charity, be it food from passers by or social housing from the council, making her a cult figure locally.

She was killed in a collision with a lorry in Chiswick High Road on February 10 and her old shelter at a car park behind Stamford Brook tube station has been turned into a shrine, with well-wishers leaving flowers, candles and pictures.

Hounslow mayor Corinna Smart, who will represent the council at Ms Naysmith's funeral, said: "Anne Naysmith was a much loved local character not just in Chiswick but across London. She will be missed by many."

The council has asked for any donations in Ms Naysmith's memory to be sent to the Royal Academy of Music to help it provide scholarships for talented piano students.
