Tottenham Hotspur will play Premiership football at Wembley Stadium next season.

The club said on Friday (April 28) afternoon it has “taken the decision to activate our option with Wembley National Stadium Limited”.

The move was widely expected and comes after Brent Council agreed to temporarily increase the number of full capacity events at the national stadium in March.

Tottenham are looking to relocate for one season while a new stadium is built on its historic White hart Lane home in north London.

The club say the decision was taken following a board meeting and means it is confident its new stadium will be completed in time for the 2018/19 season.

Breaking the news on Twitter, Spurs said: “We’ll play all our home games at @wembleystadium for the 2017/18 season whilst we complete the construction of our new stadium development.”

However, the move will anger some living close to the 90,000 capacity ground .

Speaking after Brent Council approved Wembley’s plans to allow an increase in full capacity events, Brent resident Robin Harker said: “We didn’t sign up for Premier League football matches being played in the neighbourhood on a regular basis and there’s a lot of people unhappy about the decision.”

Una Terlecka, 33, who lives a six-minute walk from the stadium, added: “My housemates and I are angry, we put up with the noise and the traffic from the stadium all the time and now this, it’s not acceptable and they should have thought about us living close to Wembley more before going ahead.”

Tottenham played their European home matches at Wembley this season

Wembley Stadium has already played home to Tottenham’s European campaign this season, which proved an unhappy experience for the north Londoners, who were knocked out of the Champions League at the group stages before losing to KAA Gent in the first Europa League knockout stage.

As a result, Spurs has been supporting local projects with the borough, including My Heart Beats for Brent (see video above).
