One of the top primary schools in the country has benefited from a £10 million extension and refurbishment.

The expansion at Fox School in Notting Hill means it will eventually be able to increase its intake from 315 pupils to 420 over seven years.

Reception year intake at the school, which was named best primary in England by the Sunday Times Schools Guide in 2016, has increased to allow 15 more children to attend the popular school.

Work has seen the original school building, in Kensington Place, completely refurbished and a two story extension built, providing a new kitchen and dining and sports hall with interconnecting studio, as well as a dedicated space for the reception class.

Classrooms have been rearranged to provide a more flexible and efficient use of space that meets current teaching needs, and includes a bespoke training suite, designed to train other teachers through the school’s continuing professional development programme and maths hub projects.

Outside there is a garden terrace providing the school with a quiet space and an allotment for the children to tend.

The whole area is designed to encourage bees and other wildlife.

The new school means the local community will be able to use the new hall and studio and outdoor areas outside of school hours, with the school aiming to build on its existing pre-and after-school and holiday clubs.

The work cost £10 million and was paid for by Kensington and Chelsea Council .

Head of education at the council Emma Will said it was good news for local schoolchildren and added: “They now have a school that reflects the high levels they have continuously reached over the years.

“The refurbishment of the existing school has been extensive, meaning that the whole school will be in a building fit for 21st century education.”

Headteacher Paul Cotter said: “We have been working with the council over a number of years to expand Fox and now my staff can make use of the latest teaching techniques in a space that is suitable to deliver it.

“I am sure the pupils will benefit greatly. I would like to thank the staff, children and parents for working so hard during the disruption of building works and I would like to thank Kensington and Chelsea Council for their support in making this possible.”
