Another set of rail strikes will add to commuter misery as the long-running row over driver-only operated trains on Southern services continues.

The three-day walkout planned from Tuesday (October 3) to Thursday (October 5) will see a limited service on the West London line.

The dispute is down to guards on trains being axed in a move by the rail company to introduce driver-only operations.

Part of the strike falls on the same day as Tube drivers staging a 24-hour walkout following a dispute about their working hours.

However, Southern has said most routes will see a normal service.

The following services will experience limited or no services:

  • Only a limited West London line service will operate
  • A number of services on other routes (predominantly Coastway services) will not operate
  • Some peak hour services between Ashford International and Hastings will not run
  • The four trains a day that run in each direction between Leatherhead and Guildford will not run
A limited service will run on Southern's West London line during strike days

The West London line stops at stations including Harrow & Wealdstone , Wembley Central, Shepherd's Bush, Kensington Olympia, West Brompton and Imperial Wharf.

RMT union general secretary Mick Cash said: "These strikes are about safety. They are about putting the safety and security of the travelling public before the profits of private companies.

"RMT will not stand back while the guards, front-line staff when it ‎comes to safety, security and access, are thrown off Britain's trains for political and financial reasons."

The union has disputes with other operators including Northern, Merseyrail and Greater Anglia and is in the process of balloting in a further dispute on South Western Railway .

Southern's passenger services director Angie Doll said: “We are aiming for business as usual on most of our routes during the RMT strikes.

"The RMT is striking about changes we made almost a year ago as part of our modernisation programme.

"Nobody has lost their job over this, in fact we employ more on-board staff to help passengers than we did before and we are providing a better service with fewer cancelled trains.

“We’ve spent 18 months negotiating with the RMT and met for 25 days.

"We’ve made four good offers to resolve this dispute yet the RMT has rejected them all without even putting them to their members for a vote.”
