The five sites to be used for the construction of the Counters Creek storm relief sewer have been announced by Thames Water.

Two locations in Hammersmith and Fulham borough have been named, and a further three in Kensington and Chelsea.

It comes as the second phase of consultation on £250 million scheme to prevent sewer flooding opened on January 12.

A series of Thames Water roadshows (see below) will now run across the two boroughs, with residents invited to share their views before April 5.

The new five sites are:

  • Cremorne Wharf Depot, Lots Road, Chelsea
  • Land adjacent to Talgarth Road and Trevanion Road, Hammersmith
  • Maclise Road car park and woodland adjacent to Kensington Olympia Station
  • Holland Villas Road at its junction with Lower Addison Gardens, West Kensington
  • The car park at Tesco Superstore, Shepherd’s Bush Road, Hammersmith

The first phase of the consultation and subsequent public engagement sessions saw hundreds of residents, business owners and other interested parties provide opinions on 16 potential sites following an initial assessment of 250 locations.

The water company can provide more detail than was available during phase one, and seek further feedback, having already made a number of changes to the initial plans after listening to residents.

The views of residents, together with the company’s responses, will form a report which will be submitted alongside planning applications in mid-2016. Further consultations will then be held by local planning authorities.

Counters Creek drop-in sessions

The news was welcomed by H&F Council, which worked with residents last summer to oppose earlier unwanted plans from Thames Water. This included Gwendwr Road open space on Barons Court Road.

“The sites proposed by Thames Water in their first consultation were simply unacceptable,” said council leader Stephen Cowan.

“Everyone agrees with the aims of the works — it is important to plan to avoid basements being flooded with sewage.

“But it is not right that Thames Water should blight other people’s lives to do this. I am glad the old sites have been dropped, and it is now important to respond to the consultation on the new sites.”

Thames Water says the relief sewer will reduce the risk of basement flooding to 1,700 properties and is consulting on the new sites from January 12 and April 5.
