This is how a new Tesco Express store in Hounslow could look after the retailer vowed to try to preserve a piece of local history uncovered during building work.

The grocery giant has begun work on a new convenience store on the corner of Clifton Road, Isleworth , close to Heston fire station and West Thames College.

Preliminary work on the building revealed a previously hidden shop sign in gilt lettering, prompting calls from local residents and councillor Tony Louki to save this attractive slice of heritage.

Cllr Louki wrote to Tesco asking if the old sign, advertising 'cycles, accessories, radios and television', could be incorporated into the new-look store.

After being alerted to the old sign by eagle eyed resident Darren Hagger, he wrote to the store in a letter published on his blog , saying: "Tesco has a fair track record on preserving local heritage at its developments large and small, the former Hoover Building and the old Matthaie Café on Kew Road, Richmond.

"Your new store will be located in the Spring Grove Conservation Area and effort by the company would not only enhance but also create greater attention of this new enterprise."

When getwestlondon contacted Tesco for a response, a spokesperson said: "We recognise the significance of this sign to the local community and are looking to incorporate it into our shop front, subject to obtaining the necessary planning consents.

"We're really looking forward to opening the new store and serving the people of Isleworth."

Cllr Louki subsequently tweeted a mocked-up photo showing how the new store might look, with Tesco's branding on the front and the historic lettering on either side of the facade.
