Disgruntled members of the Licensed Taxi Drivers Association (LTDA) will gridlock the streets around Trafalgar Square from 2pm tomorrow.

They are taking the action to register their unhappiness at a phone app called Uber, which allows users to book mini-cabs and calculate fares, and has been licensed by Transport for London (TfL).

Taxi drivers are the only group which are allowed to use meters and claim the new technology is attempting to get around the rules.

TfL has asked the High Court to clarify whether Uber does indeed use metering, and in the meantime the protest is going ahead in London and across Europe with reports saying up to 10,000 cabs could take part.

The Metropolitan Police has appealed to the organisers to share plans of the demo and has warned that without notification the protest could be illegal and drivers may be arrested. This could lead to the loss of their licences. The LTDA says it had meetings with the police three weeks ago.
