A series of free wheelchair rugby classes for disabled people are underway in Hounslow in a bid to get more people to take up the sport.

Hounslow council has teamed up with Great Britain Wheelchair Rugby to host taster sessions, encouraging newcomers to try out the game.

Coaches will be on hand to teach people the ropes, with sessions taking place at Feltham Community College, Browell's Lane, Feltham, between Wednesday November 4 and December 16.

Councillor Steve Curran, leader of Hounslow Council said: “This is a great opportunity for anyone who has been inspired by the Rugby World Cup to try this very exciting and rapidly growing sport; and to have coaching from Great Britain Wheelchair Rugby’s coaches.

“I encourage anyone who has thought about having a go at wheelchair rugby to come along and give it a try.

"We’re committed to making Hounslow the most active place in London by 2020 and, if we launch the career of a Paralympic athlete along the way then so much the better.”

The first four games are free and following sessions cost £3. Tasters are open to anyone aged over 16 with a disability but participants do not need to be wheelchair-users.

Special lightweight wheelchairs will be provided for all players.

The recent Rugby World Cup tournament was won by New Zealand at Twickenham Stadium.
