The Bush Theatre has re-opened after a year long £4.3 million revamp with new acts ready to kick start its launch.

The 20th century old library has been turned round by architects Haworth Tompkins with a brand new entrance and outdoor design.

Its modern look is coupled with a new studio space and attic rehearsal room.

Madani Younis, artistic director, said: "Following this landmark capital project, we couldn't be more excited to re-open our building to the world.

"We’re looking forward to welcoming audiences old and new to this incredible space."

The theatre opened with a "Black Lives Black Words" week which Younis said was important.

"It was important to me that we re-open with a week of celebrations that embrace the diversity of the world we live in," she said.

"It is a bold statement about one of the most important movements of our time, Black Lives Matter."

Steve Tompkins, director of Haworth Tompkins, said: "Working with the Bush Theatre team over the past few years has been a real pleasure.

"We’re looking forward to the building coming back to life as audiences, artists and staff make themselves at home again."

Plans for the new building will be to nurture, develop and showcase the best of new artists, according to those at the forefront of the project.

They will also work alongside three Project 2036 practitioners, a programme that will offer a Black, Asian, Minority Ethnic and Refugee playwright, director and producer a £10,000 bursary each year and the Bush’s Emerging Writers’ Group.

The theatre's first show which opens on Friday (April 7) will be Guards at the Taj.
