A 20-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of Syrian related terror offences, west Midlands police say.

At Gatwick Airport, a 24-year-old man was also arrested and detained over terror offences, after counter terrorism officers stopped him from boarding a plane.

The pair have been held at a West Midlands police station while searches are carried out at addresses in Birmingham.

Police said there was "no risk to any passengers at Gatwick Airport or to the wider public in relation to these arrests".

A total of 280 arrests were made in 2015 in relation to terrorism offences according to Counter Terrorism Unit data.

Figures also showed how a growing number of women were being arrested on suspicion of terrorism related activities, with 50% more females being arrested in 2015 than the year before.

It is estimated that around 800 from Britain have left the country for the Islamic State in Syria since the start of the civil war in Turkey's neighbouring country.
