A member of the public detained a suspect in Victoria on Thursday (January 26) during a failed smash and grab robbery.

Metropolitan police were called at around 10.30am to reports people smashing windows at the Suttons & Robertsons jewellery store in Victoria Street.

Officers said five people, on three mopeds, were disturbed by passing members of the public and approaching police sirens.

They tried to flee the scene and police believe they were at this stage empty-handed.

But officers said a member of the public managed to detain one of the suspects, with attending officers arresting a 16-year-old male on suspicion of robbery.

The remaining suspects - who are described as males wearing dark clothing, one with a light coloured helmet, the others with dark coloured helmets - fled the scene before police arrival.

No members of the public or anyone at the store suffered injuries, but images on social media appear to show smashed glass at the store's entrace.

Detectives from the Flying Squad are investigating and are appealing for any witnesses to the incident or anyone with any information about the suspects to contact them.
