A drop-in service for carers has been launched in Hounslow to help them cope with the emotional and practical sides of looking after loved ones.

The Carer's Guide to Caring sessions take place at The BridgeLink Centre, in Summerwood Road, Isleworth , every Wednesday during term-time, from 11am to 2pm.

Led by qualified psychotherapist Lesley Black, who herself has experience of caring for a disabled child, they are particularly aimed at warding off the spectre of isolation by giving people the chance to share their experiences.

Karen Adams, who also cares for a disabled child, will run some practical sessions to help carers find out about the support available locally.

Ms Adams said: "I know it's the dead of winter and getting out can be difficult, but don't neglect your own needs.

"Drop into a session and meet people who have shared some of your experiences. It might just be that boost you need."

The service is run by Our Barn, which was set up by parents to help young people with learning difficulties and other disabilities leaving full-time education.

All unpaid family carers or anyone claiming carers allowance is welcome to attend.

As well as joining the group sessions, visitors will have the opportunity to discuss any difficulties on a one-to-one basis.

Our Barn is also working with Hounslow Parent Carers Forum to run a mini-conference to inform carer of the changes they can expect under the new Care Act.

The first meeting took place on Wednesday, January 13, with Chiswick councillor and former Hounslow mayor Paul Lynch sharing his experiences of being a grandfather to a child with additional needs.
