A six-year-old with cerebral palsy teamed up with a British Paralympian to celebrate disability sports and raise money for the west London hospital that saved him.

Arlo Elwin took part in the Superhero Tri triathlon in Dorney Lake, Windsor on August 18 alongside Paralympian athlete Kadeena Cox and triathlete Sally Valentine.

"Superhero" Arlo lives in Hoxton but was born by emergency caesarean at Queen Charlotte’s & Chelsea Hospital after surviving several strokes inside his mother's womb.

He lives with cerebral palsy, limited vision and learning difficulties but is able to lead an otherwise normal life.

Alice Elwin, Arlo’s mother, said: “Queen Charlotte’s & Chelsea is the reason Arlo is still here today and doing so well."

“He spent 11 days on drugs and it was touch and go whether or not he would survive.

“We were like zombies at the time and it was truly heartbreaking and awful to go through, but the care was amazing."

She added: "The NHS is simply incredible and we can never put into words our appreciation for the care we received.

"We want to show Arlo he can do anything he wants to in life."

The "cheeky" six-year-old took on the triathlon challenge, organised by paralympian and Superhero Series founder Sophia Warner, when his physiotherapist invited him to take part.

He has so far raised £864 for Imperial Health Charity, which will go towards the neonatal unit at Queen Charlotte’s & Chelsea Hospital as well as four other hospitals in the Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust.

On race day Arlo charged the final 1,000 metres, running to the finish line flanked by his family and team mates.
