A pedestrian has been taken to hospital after being hit by flying debris outside London Victoria station during Storm Doris.

The male pedestrian was hit at around 3pm by debris falling from a roof and sustained head injuries, although it is not yet known how serious his condition is.

British Transport Police and the Emergency Response Unit assisted dealing with the debris after it caused injury.

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said: "Police were called at 15:03hrs on Thursday, 23 February to Victoria Street, SW1, to reports of debris falling from the roof of a building.

"Officers attended and found a pedestrian with head injuries.

"London Ambulance Service attended and took the casualty to a central London hospital.

"His condition is not known at this stage. London Fire Brigade is also in attendance and road closures are in place. "

A statement from London Ambulance Service said: "We have attended 17 weather-related incidents so far today including road traffic collisions, wall and building collapses and trees being blown over by Storm Doris. We’ve also treated a number of patients with head injuries as a result of falling debris.

“We were prepared for this and have over 400 emergency vehicles on London’s roads today, as we continue to monitor the situation.

“We’re advising Londoners to observe Met Office weather warnings and to take care when travelling around the capital this evening."

Southern Rail trains out of London Victoria were among those affected by the Storm Doris travel disruption.

There were trees on the line at Whyteleafe, Oxted, Holmwood, Tadworth and more, as well as an oil drum on the line and a level crossing fault affecting the Redhill area.

Train services running across the whole Southern network may be cancelled or delayed by up to 90 minutes, according to Network Rail, with disruption expected until the end of the day.

It was a similar story on the South West Trains network, with trains being cancelled, delayed by up to 60 minutes or revised until the end of the day.

A metal sheet blown onto the railway line between Guildford and Ascot affected the power supply to trains, while trees on the line affected services in the following areas:

  • Between Staines and Virginia Water
  • Between Basingstoke and Farnborough Main
  • Between Effingham Junction and Guildford
  • Between Eastleigh and Winchester
  • Between Teddington and New Malden
  • Between Epsom and Motspur Park
  • Between Portchester and Fareham
  • Between Hook and Farnborough
  • Between Virginia Water and Sunningdale

A tree has also come down at a Frimley school while children were outside on their morning break, and firefighters in Guildford had to take down a "loose and dangerous" banner and cable above the High Street.
