High winds battered the capital on Wednesday (November 18) leading to a high number of callouts from London Fire Brigade and London Ambulance.

Between 7pm and 2am on Friday, London firefighters attended around 40 incidents related to the windy weather, including fallen trees and scaffolding in a precarious position.

According to London Fire Brigade, the most serious incident of the night was on Chippenham Mews in Maida Vale, where a woman was taken to hospital after scaffolding fell onto three houses.

Storm Barney swept across southern parts of the UK from November 17, bringing wind gusts up to 85 mph.

Met Office issued a severe weather warning, with the extreme winds causing severe delays to road and rail travel.

At 11.25pm on November 18, fire crews were called to Regent street, where the Christmas lights were in a precarious position.

A tree ell onto a house on Elmstone Road in Fulham and a tree also hit a bus shelter on Hillmarton Road in Islington.

A tree also fell onto a house on Blenheim Road in Chiswick, thankfully there were no reports of injuries.

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “Firefighters are always on hand should any buildings, hoardings or scaffolding be left in a precarious position and posing a risk to life because of high winds.

“To help stay safe during windy weather people should always clear gardens, balconies and window sills of anything that could be blown away.

“They should also take extra care if they venture outside and be careful using candles in the case of a power cut.”
