The Srebrenica massacre must never be forgotten, especially amid reports of a rising tide of Brexit-related hate crime.

That was the message from Hounslow MP Seema Malhotra as she marked the 21st anniversary of the genocide.

More than 8,000 Muslim men and boys were murdered in Srebrenica during the Bosnian War in 1995, in what has been described as the worst atrocity on European soil since the Second World War.

Ms Malhotra, MP for Feltham and Heston , signed a remembrance book in parliament on Monday (July 11), which was the first day of Srebrenica Memorial Week.

"The Srebrenica massacre is a terrible reminder of where hatred can lead," she said.

"I'm proud of our community, our inclusiveness and our respect for each other, which it is vital for us to protect."

The charity Remembering Srebrenica, which organises memorial events across the UK, has said it is important to counter what it sees as the rising threat of hate crime in the UK.

A march against racism is being staged by Hammersmith and Fulham Council in response to concerns about a rise in hate crime following the EU referendum.

A Polish centre in Hammersmith was recently sprayed with offensive graffiti in what was believed to be a hate crime.

But there have been claims the message may have been a political statement rather than a xenophobic one.

Brentford and Isleworth MP Ruth Cadbury urged people to "unite against hate attacks" after receiving dozens of calls from worried constituents in the wake of the EU vote.
