There has been a surge in number of fines for spitting in public across Hounslow as the council steps up attempts to wipe out the "filthy" habit.

More than 120 people have been hit with fixed penalty notices (FPNs) of up to £80 since December last year after being caught spitting on the borough's streets.

Since January this year, more than 900 fines in total have been issued for spitting, littering, feeding birds or other "unacceptable" antisocial behaviour.

The council announced in March 2015 that fines would be issued for spitting and feeding birds , which it says attracts vermin.

But getwestlondon revealed last July how just one fine had been doled out for feeding birds and none for spitting since then, despite more than 5,000 people having signed a petition in support of the latter.

Hounslow Council says the increase in fines is a result of its new "zero tolerance" approach to antisocial behaviour as it attempts to smarten up the borough.

In October last year, it said more than 1,000 fines had been issued for antisocial behaviour - mostly for littering or fly-tipping - since 2013.

'We made a promise and we are delivering results'

Councillor Richard Foote, Hounslow Council’s cabinet member for community protection, said: "We made a promise to residents to tackle antisocial behaviour, and we are delivering results.

"Long gone are the days when people could get away with littering, spitting, fly tipping and other activities which make our borough look dirty and feel unsafe.

"Changes don't happen overnight and I appreciate that there is still work to be done but we will not tire. We'll keep fighting to make the borough better and hold those who insist on continuing with their filthy habits to account."

The council's enforcement team is now equipped with cameras to record antisocial behaviour should evidence be needed in court.

As well as issuing fines, the council has ordered a number of residents to clean up "eyesore" front gardens, as well as providing residents with tools to clean up littering and fly-tipping hot spots where they live.
