Residents have given a mixed response after a street in Southall was found to be the "most crime-ridden" in the country .

Police were called to Chevy Road or near the street 244 times between July and December last year, according to a study by address experts Hopewiser .

The figure, obtained through newly released police data, makes it the highest in England and Wales during this period.

Residents in the area have given a mixed response to the study, which showed 183 of the 244 reports were allegations of violence and sexual offences.

One resident in nearby Grand Drive, who asked not to be named, said: "I'm a resident on this estate, sometimes I think police have nothing better to do.

"It is like kids can't be kids anymore. I don't notice crime around here. I like it around here."

Another resident on the road, Elaine Manners, said she was surprised at the figures.

She said: "I am really surprised because it is quite quiet around here.

"We were told by police to lock doors at night, and to not go out with the back door open because there had been burglaries.

"But other than that, not much (crime)."

A total of 24 call outs were for allegations of offences for criminal damage, 20 for public order and 10 for theft.

The remainder relates to allegations of anti-social behaviour (3), burglary (2) and other crime (2).

Hopewiser said figures relate to occasions where police attended the street and/or near the street following a report of a crime, so could include side streets.

George Manners, who has lived in the area for more than 20 years, said: "I've been broken into three times.

"(They) catch fires and they have drugs.

"You come round here at 6pm and you stand on that corner and you'll see them queuing up waiting to get their drugs out of a car."

The number of convictions relating to each report has not been released.

The study looked only at residential streets in cities and omitted main roads, where reports of crimes are common at nightclubs and bus stops.

Reports of murder and rape were omitted from the study, Hopewiser said.
