These images show how a Southall site will be drastically changed as a major new housing development gets under way.

The 25 year plan will see 3,750 homes built on the former gasworks site.

The construction comes after two years of infrastructure works as well as remediation work to clean the contaminated soil.

A "soil hospital" the size of 12 Olympic swimming pools was used to clean 250,000 cubic metres of contaminated land on the 88-acre site.

Southall Waterside phase one will see seven acres of outdoor space and 618 new homes built which will be delivered to coincide with the opening of the Elizabeth Line in 2019.

The entire scheme will have 3,750 homes while phase one has 618

Crossrail will see Southall connected to Bond Street in 17 minutes, Canary Wharf in 30 minutes and Heathrow in eight minutes.

Nearly 10,000 people are expected to move in to Southall Waterside, with a new business and leisure hub, community buildings, and more than 40 acres of public open space including two new parks.

The development borders 92-acre Minet Country Park and hopes to bring a new primary school and cinema and revitalise a 1km waterside trail along the Grand Union Canal.

Southall's gasworks were decommissioned in 1972, and the land was last used as a Heathrow Airport car park, with space for 7,500 cars.

Houses built in phase one will start being occupied from 2019

The project is expected to bring 600 jobs to the area and contribute £47million to the local economy.

Ealing Council leader Julian Bell welcomed the development as construction began on Wednesday (July 19).

"Southall is being transformed and this impressive development is an important part of our plan to regenerate the area," said the council leader.

"Southall Waterside will deliver thousands of much needed new homes as well as jobs, shops and community facilities.

"I am particularly pleased that this new community will integrate with those around it - the new western access road has vastly improved the scheme and will help ensure congestion is reduced.”

The site was a gas works until 1972 and most recently was an airport car park, with rooms for 7,500 cars

Tony Pidgley CBE, chairman of the Berkeley Group, which purchased the site in 2014 and are developing the homes said: “Southall Waterside is about much more than buildings or infrastructure.

"It’s about creating a real community where the residents feel proud and people look out for each other.

"This is a really extraordinary site – 36 times the size of Trafalgar Square – and we are going to turn it into one of the best new villages in London.”
