A music festival in Ealing was called off after a man was allegedly assaulted in the park where it was due to be held.

The SoundBite Festival was set to take place in Dean Gardens, West Ealing, on Saturday (September 12) from 1pm-9pm.

But it was cancelled that morning after police were called to the road at 5.20am to reports of a man suffering a head injury.

A police spokesman said a 20-year-old man was taken to hospital in a condition not believed to be life-threatening. He said a man in his 20s had been arrested on suspicion of GBH (grievous bodily harm).

In a message on the festival website organisers said: "We are sad to report that due to an incident overnight, Dean Gardens is currently a police crime scene. For this reason we must CANCEL today's Soundbite Festival.

"We would like to thank everyone involved in the planning of the festival for their hard work and we are sorry that it is unable to go ahead."

More than a dozen bands had been lined up to appear on the music stage, curated by The Ealing Club.

Cookery classes, craft sessions and children's rides were among a host of other activities due to take place at the free event, which had been held twice previously.

Rupa Huq, MP for Ealing Central and Acton, was among those to express their disappointment on Twitter.

"Very disappointed that @SoundBiteEaling festival CANCELLED today," she wrote.

The park was cordoned off on Saturday but has since reopened.
