The odds of a white Christmas in London have dropped to 5/2 after the capital experienced wintry snow showers on Thursday.

Prior to the late November snowfall, bookies odds were at 4/1 on a white Christmas in London.

On Thursday, Arctic air sent temperatures plummeting and snowflakes tumbling across the capital and the rest of the UK.

In terms of the odds, Scotland would appear to have the most chance of enjoying snow at Christmas.

Dundee and Glasgow boast odds of 15/8 and 2/1 respectively.

Manchester and Birmingham, meanwhile, have 9/4 and 5/1 odds respectively.

The odds of a white Christmas have been slashed

Spokesman for Betfair, Katie Baylis, said: "Winter may officially start tomorrow, but with snow hitting parts of the UK today, including London, we've seen the odds of a White Christmas slashed."

She added: "The last widespread white Christmas was back in 2010, but as the big freeze strikes the UK, the odds of snow on Christmas Day are continuing to shorten with London now 5/2 from 4/1 just days ago, Manchester at 9/4 and Glasgow at 2/1.

"We’ll certainly be watching those long range forecasts very closely over the next week or so, which could see those odds tumble even more."

London has already experienced a number of snow flurries this year, with Arctic air also sending temperatures plunging in January.

The winter of 2010/11 was the coldest December for more than 100 years and there likely would have been more snow if it hadn’t been an unusually dry month.
